A poem to go with our summer series

One of our church family members recently wrote a poem about Hebrews that I wanted to share with you.  Alice and Dick Brown are members of FBC.  This poem reflects Ms Alice's passion for Jesus and His Word.  I hope it blesses you as much as it did me. 

A Journey Through Hebrews.

Oh that we would understand
That God from long ago
Revealed himself in many ways
That men might clearly know
This God who calls them to Himself,
But man did fail to show
Devotion to His loving voice
And his own way did go

So God then came in human form,
Christ Jesus was his name--
Sustainer, Heir and Perfect Sacrifice,
Yes, God, always the same.
Now seated on His holy throne
Revealed to man that we proclaim
This God who came to us
That all might know His fame.

Through sin we lost our glory
But Jesus won it back.
Through selfless pain and suffering
He gave what we now lack--
His righteousness, redemption,
By His own saving act--
A great high priest who knows our pain.
And that a holy fact.

His Word now testifies
And it is always true
The living Word now penetrates
To save both me and you
So let His everlasting Word
Cut deep to truly do
What God always intended
When Christ gave life anew.

Christ is that living Word made flesh
That we might ‘er partake
His life in us and we in Him
So let us not forsake
To study every Word He spoke
So we don’t have to fake
Our fellowship with Him
But to the nations take.

A promise made, a promise kept
Is Christ to our salvation.
God’s timing is not slow to act
To bring to full completion.
He makes all things so new and right
If we resist temptation
To help Him with His ways and means
As He completes creation.

So walk in God’s own confidence
As He makes all things new.
Showing gratitude and wonderment
For all that Christ will do
To keep His promises with trust--
His ways are surely true
To bring to His desired end
In all He does for you.

Jesus, our Great High Priest
Has gone behind the veil
To anchor fast our doubting souls
And know He will not fail--
To save us from our sinful ways
In all life’s stormy gale,
To turn our wandering hearts to Him
When we would only rail.

Christ went before the Holy Place
On my behalf and yours
With his own perfect, sinless blood
That He for us did pour
He paid a debt He did not owe
While our own debt He bore.
“It is finished!” He did cry--
It stands forevermore.

Atonement has been made,
By faith we enter in.
No more to be controlled
By the power of our sin.
Oh Hallelujah, we are bold,
His triumph we did win
That we might eagerly await
For Christ to come again.

Let us with boldness now draw near
This new and living way.
Let us draw near with full intent
Our sins now washed away.
Let us hold fast the Gospel hope
Faithful until that Day,
Continuing to love and serve

And for our brethren pray.

SBC Meeting #2 - June 14 2023

 Beloved friends, yesterday's optimism evaporated in the New Orleans heat today.  I had hoped for a few things today and, sadly for me, most of them broke the wrong way in my view.  The lone bright spot was Dr Bart Barber who did a masterful job handling the tough duties and managing the clock.  In spite of that,  it was a deeply saddening day for me.  Consider with me why. An amendment - known loosely as the "Mike Law Amendment" - had been given to the SBC Ex Committee months ago declaring the role of pastor to be limited to men.  That's already in the Baptist Faith and Message so I didn't think much of it.  Surely we won't take it as a litmus test for fidelity to the SBC - that's a creed and last I checked we Baptists are non-creedal people.  Or were.  I had hoped cooler heads would prevail and the "Mike Law" amendment would fail.  After all, the Exec Committee put it forward but did NOT recommend it for approval.  This motion declares there sh

SBC meeting - June 13 2023

 Friends, today was not the day I expected and I mean that in the best possible way.  I came into this meeting believing much of what I had read online to be an accurate portrayal of where Baptist life really was.  I was wrong.  We aren't nearly as angry or narrow as I feared.   Our friend Dr Bart Barber was re-elected in a resounding vote - 67.5% to 31.5%.  I didn't see that coming. The spirit of the meeting was pleasant, even jovial at times.  I didn't see that coming. The people who came seemed genuinely happy to be here.  I didn't see that coming.   There's still work left to do and there are questions left to be answered tomorrow, but this was a really good start.  And I'm glad it came, even if I didn't see it coming.

Home

I'm home and it's Saturday morning.  I woke up - no surprises here - at 4 AM.  Jet lag takes a couple of days to dissipate.   So this is where I'll end my travelogue.  Already I'm back to regular pastor life.  I'd been in the house about 20 minutes when I got a call that one of our deacons had lost his father-in-law.  I left for the hospital immediately.  I knew my associate pastor could handle it, but that's not a job I wanted to give away.  Later today (I hope), I'll post some pictures from our adventure.  Thanks for reading this nonsense and for walking with me along this path.  The good news is our adventures don't end just because we're home.  My prayer for this moment in time is that I'll recognize the power of THIS moment as I did while I was traveling.
