VBS II

I was talking with the Lord today about VBS and I realized something. These children - as amazing, beautiful and, occasionally frustrating as they can be, - these children are our greatest treasure. I've often thought of that placard I've seen: "In 100 years, it won't matter what I had or what I achieved - the only thing that really matters is making a difference in the life of a child." Jesus' words made clear our calling: "Allow the children to come unto me because the kingdom of Heaven is made of such as these". (Matthew 19:14, Wood translation) As I watched the video this afternoon, I thought of that again. They won't be long as we see them now and our opportunity to pour our lives into theirs may not come again. I hope you're praying with me for VBS and for the 122 children who participated today.

We've had a wild 24 hours. 24 hours ago, my friend Shane Morgan was still the pastor of Hilltop Baptist Church. He was 34 yrs old, full of life and the father, husband and pastor for his family and his church. Last night, involved in a horrific head-on accident, Bro. Shane as well as his 12 year old daughter Kalee, are home with Jesus. His wife, Lisa, and their 4 yr old, Emily, survived but are in critical and serious condition respectively. Pray for my friend Shane's family. Pray for Hilltop Baptist Church. Pray for our community. May the Lord show his mercy and his comfort through these dark days.

Last Day

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Finals at Navarro College are this week so I spent the weekend grading papers, packing and having the king of all moving sales. More on the sale in a minute. My last final is this morning at 10:30, so I'm about to leave for it as I write to you. I'll be done with grades by nightfall (I hope). It's been crazy over the weekend - everyone and their brother wants to see us before we leave. My cell and our home phone are ringing much more than normal as if people have just discovered us. As for that moving sale, we've always done well with garage sales, but this one we did great with! Not that we made a ton of money (which we didn't) but we got rid of most all of what we wanted to get rid of (which we did!). That's especially important given that THIS THURSDAY is moving day! Ready or not, here we go. Our house is a maze of boxes, full and empty ones waiting to be filled. All the drawers are empty and most all of the closets...

Tips for writers, generously borrowed

As a student, I wish someone would've helped me write more effectively BEFORE I turned it in. Instead, most of the learned I did about writing came as a result of pounding my head against a grader's pen and learning "that's not the way to do things!" As an instructor, I'm constantly seeking to help students avoid the same pitfalls I found. I found a list of several helpful suggestions from a law / theology student in California that I thought I'd rip off. 1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print. 2. Never use a long word where a short one will do. 3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out. 4. Never use the passive where you can use the active. 5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent. 6.
