Charlie's BBQ opened today

Charlie and Jennifer Rhodes, some amazing friends of mine, opened their restaurant today. It was an adventure, but a fun one! When Julie and I got there, we discovered them overwhelmed. Not wanting to be part of the problem but rather part of the solution, I decided that I had been hired so I went to work serving BBQ. I always wanted to work at a BBQ stand. It was awesome! I still smell of BBQ but to see the joy it brought to people who ate and to the Rhodes on this first day was well worth the time I spent "slinging hash." :-)

We left early – 6:45 AM – to make our way to Karuga.   It means “he jumps.”   It used to be close to Thompson Falls.   The falls are still there but they’ve been renamed with a Swahili name.   The event was supposed to begin at 11.   It took us till 11:15 to get there.   We stopped only once – a quick potty stop.   The crazy thing is it’s only about 150 miles.   It Texas, we’d cover than in just over two hours.   But they have no interstate system and they have no means to build one now.   There are speed HUMPS not bumps, in every community to slow traffic.   Everytime traffic slows, here come the hawkers.   Water, fruit, chipatie (Kenyan tortillas), cookies, potato chips, SHOES – I’ve seen it all being hawked by the roadside with people running up to your window with them.   Esp if they see a white face.   I’ve never been ashamed of being white – it’s how God made me after all – but it’s no asset ...

A Christmas to remember

As you know, this has been a year of firsts in our home. Most importantly, our son Joshua was born on April 11th this year so this has been a year of the first smile, the first laugh, the first roll-over, the first tooth and now, his first Christmas. He's brought light into our home that I simply couldn't have imagined before he got here. It's funny. . . . we adopted Joshua, but I honestly don't know how on earth I could love him anymore if he were biologically mine. It's almost as if the Lord orchestrated things and people, placing him in just the right family at just the right time (ya think??!??!). Here's a sample of what I mean. Last Day

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Finals at Navarro College are this week so I spent the weekend grading papers, packing and having the king of all moving sales. More on the sale in a minute. My last final is this morning at 10:30, so I'm about to leave for it as I write to you. I'll be done with grades by nightfall (I hope). It's been crazy over the weekend - everyone and their brother wants to see us before we leave. My cell and our home phone are ringing much more than normal as if people have just discovered us. As for that moving sale, we've always done well with garage sales, but this one we did great with! Not that we made a ton of money (which we didn't) but we got rid of most all of what we wanted to get rid of (which we did!). That's especially important given that THIS THURSDAY is moving day! Ready or not, here we go. Our house is a maze of boxes, full and empty ones waiting to be filled. All the drawers are empty and most all of the closets...
